Aeronautical Engineering Department aims to educate engineers for the design and manufacturing of new aircraft, and maintenance of civil and military aircraft. The department also conducts research and applications on the related fields.

Aeronautical Engineering Department was founded in 1941 under the Mechanical Engineering Department as a branch awarding Aeronautical Engineering degree. In 1944, the department separated from the Mechanical Engineering Faculty with the establishment of Faculty of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. 11 professors (1 foreigner), 3 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professor, 2 Lecturer and 13 Research Assistants form the current staff. As of today, 1269 students graduated from the undergraduate program and 529 bachelor science degree students are enrolled in the programme, now, including the English preparation school and 1,2,3, and 4. grades. Every year 70 students, who scored in the first three percentile in the nationwide entrance exam are accepted to he programme.

In addition to its educational activities, Department of Aeronautical Engineering conducts joint research studies on various subjects by establishing academic relationships with relevant institutions at home and abroad. With the ERASMUS Program, agreements have been made with universities in European countries such as Germany (RWTH Aachen), Netherlands (Delft University of Technology), England (The University of Glasgow) and Italy (Poly. Torino).
