Undergraduate Program

Graduation Projects / Engineering Design Projects

In the Aeronautical Engineering and Astronautical Engineering Departments, graduation projects are carried out within the scope of the UCK / UZB 4901(E) and UCK / UZB 4902(E) Engineering Design courses. These courses aim to enable students to apply, in an integrated manner, the engineering knowledge and skills acquired throughout their undergraduate education to a real design, analysis, research, or application problem.

During the graduation project process, students are required to complete the following steps in accordance with the relevant application guidelines: topic selection, supervisor assignment, interim report, final report, presentation, jury evaluation, and online submission.

Submission Platform: designproject.uubf.itu.edu.tr

Graduation Project Documents: UCK/UZB 4901/4902 Graduation Project Documents

Note: The submission platform and document folder above should be followed regularly for up-to-date templates, forms, and announcements.

Application Guidelines

Courses and Supervisor Selection

Course Schedule

  • UCK / UZB 4901(E) and UCK / UZB 4902(E) courses are offered in both fall and spring semesters.
  • These courses are not offered during the summer term.
  • For 4902 courses offered in the spring semester, the submission and evaluation period may be extended to the summer term upon formal petition.
  • A similar extension does not apply to other courses or semesters.

Supervisor Selection

  • Students apply to relevant faculty members for graduation project supervision.
  • The total number of students enrolled in the 4901 and 4902 courses under a single supervisor may not exceed 10.
  • Students who cannot find a supervisor may be assigned to an appropriate faculty member by the department.

Team Work Guidelines

  • Team work is permitted in graduation projects.
  • A team may consist of at most 5 students.
  • Team work is subject to supervisor approval.
  • Even when working in a team, reports and presentations must be prepared and submitted individually.
  • Each student's submitted work must contain only their own original contributions.
  • In team projects, a supervisor-approved Team Work Form must be appended to the report.
Evaluation

Submission and Evaluation Process

Interim reports, final reports, and presentations for graduation projects are submitted according to the schedule announced for the relevant semester. All submissions must be made through the current system and in the declared formats.

Deliverable Submission Deadline Evaluation Weight
Interim Report Week 7 of the semester Evaluated by the supervisor. 20%
Final Report – Formal Evaluation Week 14 of the semester Formally evaluated by the committee. 10%
Final Report – Scientific Evaluation Week 14 of the semester Evaluated by the supervisor and jury for content and quality. 45%
Presentation Video presentation for 4901; live presentation for 4902 Evaluated by the jury. 25%

Presentation Format

Course Presentation Format
4901 The student prepares a "Two-Minute Graduation Project" video presentation consisting of 2 slides. The presentation is completed in 120 seconds and submitted as a video recording.
4902 The student prepares a presentation of at most 15 slides. A time of 10–15 minutes is allocated and the presentation is delivered live before the jury.
Reporting

Report Format

Reports must be prepared using the announced MS Office or LaTeX templates and submitted in PDF format. The report format is derived from the AIAA conference paper template. The aim is to support students in producing work of a quality suitable for scientific events and a 4902 final report of publishable standard.

4901 Final Report Sections

  • Abstract
  • Introduction and Objectives
  • Methodology and Literature Review
  • Study-specific section(s)
  • Conclusions and Outcomes
  • References

Required Appendices

  • Team Work Form — mandatory if team work is performed.
  • Work Schedule — mandatory.
  • Ethics Statement — mandatory.
  • If deemed necessary, detailed analyses, experimental results, drawings, source code, and similar materials may be appended to the report.
Ethics & Event

Ethics Statement, Originality, and Design Event

Ethics Statement and Originality

Students declare, by means of the Ethics Statement form, that the work they submit is original and that they have not engaged in any act that could be considered plagiarism. Scientific sources, technical documents, textbooks, patents, theses, and previous graduation project reports are within the scope of plagiarism assessment.

Submitted reports may be subject to plagiarism checks when deemed necessary. If unethical citation or non-original content is detected, the student may be considered to have failed.

Design Projects Presentation Event

A presentation event is organised on a set date for students who will deliver their 4902 final presentations. The purpose of this event is to provide students with an academic presentation experience similar to that of a symposium. The event is planned to be open to all students and faculty members of the faculty as much as possible.

Online Submission of Final Reports and Presentation Videos

As of the 2023–2024 Fall Semester, the design project intake forms, interim reports, final reports, and videos for UCK 4901, 4902 and UZB 4901E, 4902E courses have been submitted through the Design Project Submission System.
